“Relief printing, in which a block is carved, rolled with a thin layer of ink, and then stamped onto paper, is considered one of the most direct modes of printmaking. Woodcuts require no acid or special equipment, but like all prints, they are one step removed from the hand that made them: they are the static evidence of carving. Wielding a gouge can be a unique drawing challenge–one might shred the block in a frenzy of cuts, or make delicate incisions, carefully excising grain-sized bits. “Drawn with a Knife” presents a broad range of carving styles, techniques, and wild maneuvers, celebrating the creatures that lurk in the linoleum, as sweet and monstrous as the printmakers who slice them into being.”
The show opens Saturday night, March 10th, 6-10 pm, and runs through March 26th. Head over after the Chicago Zine Fest and keep that fresh ink flowing!
